A few years ago, a Japanese company that makes and sells Viagra began marketing an “off label” prescription drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It was known as sildenafil citrate.
Now the FDA is warning consumers against “unapproved” use of the drug and is taking steps to make sure the drug is safe and effective.
The agency said it is also working with regulatory authorities and other healthcare professionals to ensure that the drug is safe and effective. A spokesman for the Japanese company said the company would be “reviewing further information,” but declined to provide a full statement.
“While we are not aware of any other regulatory authorities that would require or implement any measures to ensure that this drug is safe, the warning against the sale and marketing of unapproved drugs is clearly not in our database,” the FDA said.
“The warning about unapproved use should be taken seriously and a thorough investigation is needed before any regulatory action is taken.”
“We are committed to working with the FDA to ensure that all such products sold by the Japanese pharmaceutical company as well as those manufactured by foreign manufacturers are handled safely and effectively,” the agency said.
A spokesman for the company said the FDA will continue to monitor the situation and will take appropriate action.
The FDA said it has issued more than 100 warning letters to the company, including one to the company’s board of directors, to address the issue.
In a statement, the company said the company is “reviewing the details of any regulatory action that may be necessary before making any final decision,” adding that it is working with regulatory authorities and other stakeholders to ensure that all drugs marketed as sildenafil are safe and effective.
The company has made some progress in identifying and contacting manufacturers to ensure the safety and efficacy of the drug and to notify them of any adverse effects.
A spokesman for the company said the company has worked closely with its regulatory and consumer health departments and is reviewing any concerns.
“We are making the first available effort in order to address the safety and effectiveness of sildenafil,” the company said in its statement.
“It is important for consumers to know that the drug is safe, effective and has been approved by the FDA.”
